Re: Pitching Mechanics From A-Z

id you know -- according to the American Journal of Sports Medicine --that nearly 49% of youth baseball pitchers will suffer an elbow or shoulder injury this season?

Some are lucky to get off with a few days of rest and ice… but more and more kids are now suffering from chronic shoulder pain… fractures and tears in the elbow cartilage… and even traumatic arm injuries that can end a baseball player's career.

At the high school level, it's even worse. Doctors are now performing five times more "Tommy John" elbow surgeries than they were just a decade ago!

The good news is… there's a lot we coaches and parents can do to keep our pitchers safe and healthy. Here are some ideas to start implementing in practices and games right away...

3 Tips For Saving Your Pitcher's Arm

Watch the pitch counts.

Most baseball arm injuries aren't caused by a single traumatic event… it's the cumulative effect of the pitching motion over a long period of time that really causes the damage.

With more kids now playing year-round baseball, it's more important than ever to limit the number of balls they're throwing.

For players age 9-15, USA Baseball recommends no more than 50-75 pitches per game, 1,000 pitches per season, and 2,000-3,000 pitches per year.

Kids should also avoid pitching for teams with overlapping seasons, and take at least three consecutive months off each year to let their bodies recover.

Never pitch through fatigue or pain.

Most kids are reluctant to admit when they're tired or hurt… so it's critical for coaches to watch for the warning signs.

A tired pitcher's mechanics will usually break down in a few subtle ways. He might show less shoulder rotation and knee flexion, a slightly more upright trunk position, or a different arm slot on the release.

You may also notice his fastball tailing up high out of the strike zone, or a sudden drop in velocity.

Remember, if you pull a pitcher because of fatigue or pain, don't just shift him to another throwing intensive position (like catcher or shortstop). Sit him down for the rest of the game to let his arm recover.

Teach the proper mechanics.

This is the big one - the main reason so many pitchers suffer from elbow and shoulder injuries at such a young age.

Here's the deal: To throw a baseball properly, a pitcher has to get into the right position, at the right time, with the right sequence of movements.

Like dominoes falling.

You can break down the pitching motion into six mechanical phases: rocker step, balance, separation, throwing position, release, and follow through.

Each one of these phases works together to create an efficient transfer of energy from the player's feet into the ball.

Mechanical problems (or as the eggheads would call it: "disruptions in the kinetic chain") are usually caused by poor balance or poor alignment.

The result is increased stress -- and, eventually injury -- at the weakest links in the chain: the elbow or shoulder.

To keep our pitchers healthy and safe, coaches and parents like us have to understand...

a) What good mechanics look like…

b) How to spot mechanical problems, and…

c) How to fix them before they cause a major injury

That's not something you can figure out just by watching MLB games on TV… or browsing around on the Internet… or chatting with your brother-in-law (who used to pitch in high school).

You need reliable expertise and guidance… the kind of instruction you can only get from an experienced professional.

That's why I'm so excited to tell you about this new online video clinic called "Pitching Mechanics From A-Z."

Your expert instructor is Scott Berry, head baseball coach at Mayville State University, NAIA Hall of Famer, and one of the winningest coaches in college baseball history. In 27 years, he's racked up an astonishing 20 conference championships, with an all-time record of 770-442.

Inside this online clinic, Coach Berry reveals his complete step by step system for installing airtight pitching mechanics for any youth or high school player.

From planning your bullpen workouts, to understanding the phases of the pitching motion, correcting common mistakes, to drillwork… it's all here.

And it's all explained with detailed coaching pointers and straightforward video demonstrations!

It's perfect if…

You're a rookie beginner, and you want to learn the CORRECT way to teach pitching fundamentals
You're a baseball mom or dad, and you're looking for some pointers to keep your young pitcher safe and give him the extra edge
You're a seasoned coach who knows the ropes, and you need some fun, new drills to spice up your practices and reinforce safe pitching technique

Okay, you're probably hungry for more details, so here's some more info on what you'll be learning inside the online clinic.

Part 1 covers Coach Berry's approach for developing an outstanding pitcher
How To Coach Your Pitchers

To start out, Coach Berry takes you through his own proven approach for developing outstanding pitchers.

You'll learn a variety of unique practice planning tips, coaching pointers, and little-known strategies to shorten the learning curve.

Plus... mental training tactics to help develop confidence in your pitchers and help them maximize their potential!

Here's a small sample…

The 2 most important keys to developing safe, effective pitching mechanics.
Are good mechanics really essential for top level performance? Coach Berry answers this controversial question once and for all.
Your #1 priority in the bullpen. This is the key to making your practice time as efficient as possible…
Why 80% of your pitcher's practice time MUST be spent in the "stretch" position.
How to help your pitchers identify their weaknesses, develop good habits, and continuously improve for long term success!

And a lot more.

Part 2 takes you through the 6 mechanical phases of the pitching motion.

The 6 Phases Of Safe, Effective Pitching Mechanics

In the second part of this video, Coach Berry introduces the six mechanical phases of the pitching motion: rocker step, balance, separation, throwing position, delivery and release, and follow through.

For each phase, he explains and demonstrates the specific body movements and fundamentals you'll need to install the proper mechanics with your own pitchers.

There's no biomechanical mumbo-jumbo here… and you won't need a PhD from Harvard to understand it.

Everything is laid out in plain English with simple step by step instructions that ANYONE can use.

Here's a quick sample…

Why the direction of your rocker step doesn't matter… but THIS body part absolutely MUST stay in line with the plate (find out at 12:53)
How to eliminate "excessive body movement" in the windup. This is one of the biggest causes of wild pitches…
4 critical things to look for in your pitcher's throwing position. (one's in the torso, one's in the throwing arm, and two are in the legs…)
Why "taking the chest to the front knee" helps your pitcher get maximum extension during the release phase, for a safer, more fluid delivery and jaw-dropping velocity on the fastball!
A tiny "glove-pull" adjustment that generates massive rotational power from the lower body, into the midsection, and through the release point… (get an extra 3-5 MPH on your fastball almost instantly)

And a lot more.

Part 3 discusses the 5 most common mechanical probles pitchers suffer from.
The 5 Greatest Mechanical Problems

Part 3 of this video is my personal favorite.

Coach Berry explains the five biggest mechanical mistakes that young pitchers make, and provides you with some easy tips and strategies to cure them.

Each one of these mechanical inefficiencies puts increased stress on the arm, back, or lower body… and can be extremely dangerous if not corrected!

Here's a quick rundown…

Problem #1: How to stop your pitcher from rushing his approach and delivery. This mistake is EXTREMELY common (most pitchers don't even realize they're doing it)… but it's brain-dead simple to correct!
Problem #2: Why opening the front side throws your pitcher off-balance and sabotages his control… plus, a simple coaching cue that immediately fixes it!
Problem #3: A brutal "Wrapping" mistake which over-rotates the torso, pulling the pitcher out of alignment and over-stressing the hip and knee joints.
Problem #4: Why most pitching instructors are DEAD WRONG about "throwing overhand" … and how it actually jeopardizes the health of your pitching arm. This one seems hard to believe at first, but you'll be nodding your head in agreement once you hear Coach Berry's explanation!
Problem #5: How "short-arming" the follow-through puts devastating stress on the elbow and shoulder. Learn how to identify this common issue, and a simple "extension" trick that cures it right away.

And a lot more.

Part 4 reveals Coach Berry's 6 favorite drills for better pitching mechanics

6 Essential Drills For Better Mechanics

In this last section, Coach Berry shows you his 6 favorite drills for installing and maintaining proper pitching mechanics.

Each one is designed to reinforce a specific part of the pitching motion, and imprint your athlete with the techniques he'll need to succeed on the hill.

Here's a small sample…

How to break down your pitcher's mechanics using a clever little "Sequence" drill. This one's great for identifying and fixing any kinks in his delivery.
IMPORTANT: Why you should NEVER use a live ball in mechanical drillwork. There's a common household item you SHOULD put in your pitcher's hand instead…
A unique "Toe Tap" drill that immediately develops better timing and rhythm. It actually forces your pitcher to be more deliberate through the balance phase, get his hands separated, then drive forward under control… for a blazing fastball and pinpoint command!
The "2x6 Board" drill that reinforces proper alignment through the entire pitching motion.
Why your pitcher's heel MUST stay flush with the rubber during the delivery. This one tip alone will immediately fix the majority of your horizontal control problems.
The Wall Drill: Gives your pitchers instant feedback when they "wrap" the throwing arm… so they can identify and fix this problem for themselves!
How to ensure your pitcher gets his chest out over his lead leg, with a unique "Uphill Throwing" drill. This is the #1 key to getting better extension on the release.
A "Double Release" drill that forces your pitcher to drive out toward the target while sustaining his balance. Do this for 20 minutes a week and you'll see an immediate boost in velocity…
How to help your pitchers develop a rock-solid foundation with "Stride Leg Squats." This is the best functional exercise I've seen for lower body pitching strength… and you'll be amazed at how quickly it improves your pitcher's power and accuracy!

Listen. These drills and fundamentals have been backed up with high-speed video analysis, tested in baseball science labs, and proven with thousands of youth and high school pitchers across the country.

There's no need to drive halfway across the state for some boring coaching seminar… or slog through a mountain of baseball books… or waste hours on the Internet reading worthless articles.

All the hard work's been done for you, and summarized in a simple video "blueprint" that's guaranteed to inject your pitchers with top-notch pitching skills in no time flat.

Simple. Safe. Fast.

And a lot of fun too. You'll love the feeling of transforming your pitcher into a finely tuned athlete with picture perfect mechanics.

Coaches, parents, even other players will marvel at how fluid and professional your pitchers look on the mound. And you'll be blown away with how much better your team plays.

The final results are astonishing. Healthier, more productive, more effective pitchers. Fewer runs allowed. And more wins for your squad.

Here's the bottom line.

No matter how much (or how little) experience you have right now I guarantee these pitching tips and strategies will give you the knowledge, skills and CONFIDENCE to become an expert pitching coach.

With your new skill-set, you'll be able to...

Develop and improve the pitchers on your team.
Evaluate new pitchers at tryouts.
